On November 12, Prof. Jose-Miguel Bello Villarino, from the University of Sydney (ARC Centre of Excellence for Automated Decision-Making & Society), gave a seminar entitled “La persona vulnerable en la regulación de la inteligencia artificial de la Unión Europea: límites y concreción desde una perspectiva del derecho de obligaciones”. This activity is part of the cycle of monthly seminars held by the research group De Conflictu Legum for the analysis of the Proposal for the modernization of the Spanish Civil Code on obligations and contracts.
On Tuesday, November 12, at the Faculty of Law of the University of Santiago de Compostela, the seminar “La persona vulnerable en la regulación de la inteligencia artificial de la Unión Europea: límites y concreción desde una perspectiva del derecho de obligaciones”, was held by Prof. Jose-Miguel Bello Villarino, from the University of Sydney (ARC Centre of Excellence for Automated Decision-Making & Society), organized by the Research Group De Conflictu Legum and framed within the Project “La inaplazable modernización del Derecho de obligaciones y contratos del Código civil español” (PID2022-138909NB-100).
The seminar addressed the implications for artificial intelligence following the adoption of Regulation (EU) 2024/1689 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 13 June 2024 laying down harmonised rules on artificial intelligence and amending Regulations (EC) No 300/2008, (EU) No 167/2013, (EU) No 168/2013, (EU) 2018/858, (EU) 2018/1139 and (EU) 2019/2144 and Directives 2014/90/EU, (EU) 2016/797 and (EU) 2020/1828 (Artificial Intelligence Act). Thus, the presentation dealt with the prohibited AI practices and how certain vulnerabilities can be exploited by the placing on the market, the putting into service or the use of an AI system, considering, in turn, what is the appropriate legal scope from which solutions can be provided to the most conflicting casuistry, as well as comparing previously approved texts with which, despite having unequal characteristics and contexts, some parallels can be established in relation to the problems that AI raises.
